A maintenance technician is the one who makes sure that any type of equipment works properly. Maintenance engineers are responsible for working on a wide variety of machines, such as those used in the medical, manufacturing, aviation, heating / cooling, or food preparation industries. They perform routine maintenance, troubleshoot problems, and make necessary repairs. Maintenance engineers would also be responsible for removing old equipment and installing new machines.

Maintenance engineers work most often in industrial settings. They can also work for real estate companies and perform checks on various systems in commercial and residential buildings. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics says projected job growth for all maintenance and general repair workers, including maintenance engineers, will be 6% through 2024. An expected rebound in general fields is believed is construction and maintenance is an important factor in this projection. .

Duties and responsibilities of the maintenance technician

Maintenance engineers are involved in various activities to ensure the maintenance and repair of industrial machines. In reviewing various jobs for this profession, we have discovered that the following are among the primary duties and responsibilities of a maintenance technician.

Equipment inspection and maintenance

To avoid malfunctions and other problems with the equipment, it is the responsibility of the maintenance technician to ensure that the equipment is working and is not in danger of breaking. They perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance on machines to keep them running smoothly. This could include replacing worn parts and checking oil and other fluid levels.

Make repairs

When an industrial machine fails, the maintenance technician must get it running again. They are responsible for troubleshooting and evaluating whether parts can be repaired or need to be replaced. They would generally be responsible for ordering and installing replacement parts. Maintenance engineers must also make updates or changes to established systems to improve or expand efficiency.

Install new equipment

In some cases, machines that are no longer working simply cannot be repaired due to the age of the machine or the cost of repairs. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the maintenance technician to install new equipment and to perform post-installation checks to ensure that all systems are working properly.
