NOC vs. SOC ?

Although they may look and look similar, there are big differences in the goals of a network operations center and a security operations center, also known as a SOC.

The main criterion that a NOC and a SOC have in common is that they work with MSP to solve IT problems and never with the end user. However, when a NOC focuses on remotely monitoring and maintaining a customer's IT environment to meet SLAs and ensure customer operations without technical disruption, a SOC focuses much more on security. SOCs monitor vulnerabilities, attack methods and emerging threats in a client network and are ready to detect anomalies and mitigate emerging cyber attacks.

Most SOCs use a SIEM process (Security Information and Event Management), which summarizes information from different data streams of security-oriented systems. From systems for the detection and evaluation of network vulnerabilities to governance, risk and compliance systems (GRC), penetration test tools, systems for the detection and prevention of intruders and registration management systems. The analysis of network behavior and much more is collected and analyzed by SOC technicians who are themselves trained security experts.

NOCs and SOCs offer many services - all of their mission-critical value for an MSP - but their missions or goals rarely overlap. Including these teams in a wider range of services offers MSPs a greater advantage than trying to combine the activities associated with these groups into a hybrid team.
